Biography

Björn Busse is currently head of a ‘Emmy Noether Research Group’ which is a 5 year-program run by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The group of Björn has recently been included in the DFG-Heisenberg Professorship program and is currently hosted by the Department of Osteology and Biomechanics at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf.

He has a strong interest in skeletal imaging and bone quality analyses. In this context, Björn has graduated in bioengineering (2003), and has finished his Ph.D. at the Free and Humboldt University Berlin, Charité - University Medicine Berlin (2009), where he has focused on research regarding bone imaging and bone mineralization. In particular, he has developed skills in scanning (SEM) & backscattered electron microscopy, microanalysis, materials testing and bone histomorphometry.

Björn’s work provides a contribution to our understanding on the fracture of bone, specifically by focussing on aspects of bone quality, such as osseous changes with skeletal aging, osteoporosis, osteoporosis treatment strategies, osteomalacia, Paget’s disease of bone, from both a medical and engineering perspective.

He gained both an academic teaching and research experience while completing his post-doc research fellowship at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) / Department of Materials Science and Engineering, at the University of California, Berkeley (2010-2011) funded through a stipend obtained from the German Research Foundation
